Christmas 2011: The Simsbury Land Trust made a local version of the Monopoly game. Look at the first square. You might know it as Mediterranean Avenue (or Boulevard de Belleville, Bad Straβe, Dorpsstraat, Житная Ул or Geylang dependent on where you're from). It's for sale for 60 Simsbury Dollars. The fee for one visit is only 2 Simsbury Dollars. It's the cheapest place in town. Now, take an even closer look. It's your own Simsbury Public Library Chess Club! Click here to order.

Dec 11 2011: Our Jonathan ended 2nd in the Middle School Section of the New England Championship held at Bradley. Nice job!

Dec 3 2011 we hosted a nice tournament with 35 participants organized by the Avon Chess Club.

David Aldi (right) and Daniel Rozovsky helped run it.

Josh (right) found out how big and tough those 12th graders really are.

JP, were you really playing cards during our tournament? (remember: jouez lentement si'l tu plaît)

May 24 '11: our chess-cake: mate in 2! (cake by Terry from Fitzgerald's)

The solution:

  1. If it's pinks turn: 0-0 followed by Rd1 mate
  2. If it's greens turn: ..Ra6, now pink is not allowed to castle because on the previous pink's move the king or rook must have been played because otherwise there are only pawns on the cake that are still in their starting position. The pawns could not have been played. Therefore either the king or the rook played and, therefore, pink is not allowed to castle. Now, the mate is an easy ..Ra1 on the second green move after any pink move.

May 24 '11: Samantha with a nice book written and personally signed by the ex US women chess champion Jennifer Shahade.
